Building automation has three interoperable standard network protocols to chose from:

  • BACnet
  • LonWorks
  • Modbus

BACnet

Building Automation Controls Network, or BACnet is a network protocol used by devices to communicate across building automation systems. It's used by manufacturers and also by system users.

Modbus

Modbus is a network protocol used to connect electronic equipment to industrial automation systems and industrial applications. It's simplicity allows it to be a useful tool for building automation.

LonWorks

LonWorks is a communication network protocol useful for building automation applications designed to run on low bandwidth, networking devices through power lines, fiber options, and more. This is a proprietary system, expensive and mostly exclusive to manufacturers.
